Kula Devata and Ishta Devata are not the same — and ignoring either is a spiritual mistake with real consequences. In this second part of the Ayurveda conversation, Dr. Robert Svoboda — one of the few Westerners formally trained in Ayurveda by an Indian Vaidya — explores the deeper metaphysical architecture that underlies authentic Ayurvedic practice.
The conversation moves through parampara as the living transmission of vidya from guru to shishya, the Amritanubhava’s teaching on Prakriti and Purusha, past-life regression’s tendency to produce glamorous self-aggrandising narratives rather than truth, and why Rahul Dewan’s family — migrants from Pakistan — lost their Kula Devata connection. Dr. Svoboda’s decades of studying Jyotisha, Vedic chanting, and yoga under master teachers are woven throughout. The episode closes on the principle: genuine desire for knowledge, if sincere, will eventually attract the right teacher — because all these vidyas need humans to survive.
