Freedom of Speech curbed – ‘The Kashmir Files’ Press Conference | Vivek Agnihotri | #SangamTalks

In a press conference addressing the global success of the film ‘The Kashmir Files,’ the creators shed light on unexpected challenges faced due to alleged interference from international media giants such as New York Times, Al Jazeera, and Bloomberg. Released on March 11, 2022, the film has garnered widespread attention for its portrayal of the Kashmir genocide, resonating with audiences worldwide.

The press conference, attended by prominent figures including filmmaker Mr. Vivek Agnihotri, producer and actress Mrs. Palavi Joshi Agnihotri, Dr. Shefalika Bhan Kothwal, and Shri Utbulkal, the coordinators of Global Kashmiri Pandit Diaspora, took an unexpected turn as the creators expressed their dismay at what they perceive as misinformation and toxicity spread by certain foreign media outlets. Mr. Agnihotri began the conference by expressing gratitude to attendees and explaining that the event wasn’t initially planned. However, due to the film’s historical success, foreign correspondents wanted to hold a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents Club. The turning point came when the president of the Foreign Correspondents Club informed Mr. Agnihotri of the cancellation of the press conference. He revealed that major international media players, specifically naming New York Times, Al Jazeera, and Bloomberg, threatened mass resignations if the discussion on the Kashmir genocide proceeded on their premises.

Expressing his concerns about foreign media interfering in Indian politics, Mr. Agnihotri asserted that some agenda-driven international media houses are trying to dictate terms and threaten India’s sovereignty. He highlighted the role of the Foreign Correspondents Club, a government-owned property located in front of the Supreme Court, symbolizing the highest temple of justice. The denial of a press conference on the theme of justice raises questions about press freedom, with Mr. Agnihotri suggesting a propaganda effort against India. The press conference not only highlighted the film’s achievements but also brought attention to the challenges faced in discussing the sensitive topic of the Kashmir genocide. It raises significant concerns about the role of international media in influencing Indian politics and threatening the country’s sovereignty, emphasizing the need for a nuanced and unbiased approach in reporting on such delicate subjects.
