India had a university at Kandallur when Europeans were living in caves — and the National Education Policy is our first real attempt to reclaim that lineage.Prof. K. Ramasubramanian, IIT Bombay mathematician and Indian knowledge systems scholar, addresses the foundational lie that has shaped Indian education since colonisation: that India was a primitive, uneducated society civilised by British missionaries. He locates the audience a few kilometres from Kandallur Shala — an ancient Kerala learning centre — and situates this alongside Nalanda to make the absurdity viscerally clear. When India had Ayurveda as a complete philosophy of life, Europe had barely primitive medical practices.The NEP’s ambition is framed as civilisational restoration: connecting India’s young people to the genetic and intellectual lineage of Madhava of Sangamagrama (who anticipated calculus by two centuries), Aryabhata, and Varahamihira. The argument is biological and inspiring — the same genetic pool that produced these breakthroughs is alive and present in India’s 70-80 crore working-age youth. A new Gurukula-based Ayurvedic education system recently announced by NCCISM is offered as proof that the restoration has already begun.
