Science looks for the ultimate entity — electron, proton, quark — and never finds it. That’s because consciousness cannot be found through matter. Dr. Indranil Basu Ray, interventional cardiac electrophysiologist, adjunct professor at the University of Memphis, visiting professor at AIIMS Rishikesh, and founder of the American Academy of Yoga in Medicine, opens this new series by placing Vedanta and Kriya Yoga on a collision course with reductionist neuroscience.
His argument: the physical brain is limited because it is made of the same particles it tries to study. You cannot transcend matter using a material instrument. To truly understand consciousness, you must access the body that is made of consciousness — the soul or energy body — which is what deep Kriya Yoga sadhana facilitates. The Rishis understood this 5,000 years ago and designed precise practices to systematically shift the seeker’s centre of identity from the physical to the energetic to the causal body.
Dr. Ray’s lineage traces through Swami Hariharananda Giri and Paramahansa Yogananda to Yukteswar Giri, Lahiri Baba, and ultimately the Nath tradition. The series promises to map these ancient frameworks onto modern cardiac physiology and disease — making the conversation between Vedanta and contemporary medicine concrete, not merely metaphorical.
