Is Islam Ready For Reform?: Arif Mohammad Khan In Conversation With Sanjay Dixit

In this very interesting conversation, Shri Arif Mohammad Khan and Shri Sanjay Dixit discuss and debate on the desirability and possibility of reforms within Islam.

The historical context of falasafa, and ishtehad in the Abbasid Empire, and the influence of Al Ghazali and Ibn Taiymiyyah in killing ishtehad, and finishing off the falasafa school (the Tahqiqis), leading to the current situation are also touched upon.

The features of Hanafi Islam (Taqlid), and the general supremacism and intolerance exhibited towards other faiths by all strains of Islam, whether Ahl-e-Hadis (Wahhabi), Barelvi or Deobandi are also discussed.

They look at the incompatibility of Time Concepts and Logic Concepts of Islam and Hinduism, and points of reconciliation.

Arif Mohammad Khan is an Indian politician. He is a former cabinet minister in the union of India and is currently serving as the Governor of Kerala. He has been a prominent advocate of reforming Muslim personal law. He authored the book “Text and Context: Quran and Contemporary Challenges”.

Shri Sanjay Dixit is a senior IAS officer who has authored the best selling book “Krishna Gopeshwara”.
