Bengali Hindus have faced horrific persecution since the medieval times, and this persecution has continued throughout the last century and is going on even today. While millions of Bengali Hindus faced religious persecution at the hands of Muslim rulers, it turned into a genocide in East Bengal and then East Pakistan, peaking in 1971. Post-1971, the exodus of Bengali Hindus fleeing horrific atrocities and discriminations in Bangladesh continues. Bengali Hindus have also faced persecution–racial, not communal–in Assam and Meghalaya and been displaced in large numbers from those states in the past.
